The Aussiedoodle is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle, usually a Standard or Miniature Poodle.

Both of the breeds used to create Aussiedoodles are considered to be canine Einsteins. It’s to your benefit to give the Aussiedoodle a job that will keep him busy, busy, busy. Teach him to find and bring you things, pull your gardening equipment around the yard, or anything else you can think of. Keeping him occupied will ensure that he doesn’t go off and find his own (likely destructive) entertainment. But if you begin socialization and training early and use positive reinforcement techniques such as praise, play and food rewards, you will be rewarded with a wonderful companion. Aussiedoodles are amazing companion dogs. They love being with people and need to live in the house, never outdoors. Aussiedoodles can come in many different colors, patterns, shapes, and they average 14 to 23 inches tall.

He is intelligent, friendly and affectionate. Depending on the size of the Poodle used in the cross, an Aussiedoodle’s weight can range from 35 to 70 pounds. The coat of the Aussiedoodle can be any number of colors, to include shades of black, grey and white; typically the coat will be soft but may be anywhere from somewhat wavy to very wavy to that of a Poodle. Dogs of the hybrid will usually display a slender, but muscular build.  The Aussiedoodle tends to be an intelligent dog who enjoys a moderate to high level of activity, excels in agility activities, they need a good walk or active playtime each day, and they are athletic enough to participate in such dog sports as agility, flyball, obedience and rally. They can also be excellent therapy dogs which provides them with both physical and mental activity, and get along well with children and other animals.  Dogs of this hybrid can do well in an apartment or home as long as he is taken out for exercise (a good walk, swim or active play) on a daily basis. Should that not be possible, the Aussiedoodle should have a fenced in yard where he can safely run around and expend his energy.

Maintenance of your Aussiedoodle will depend in part on the type of coat he inherits; The coat may require brushing every other day (if curly) or less frequently if wavy. Should he have a curly coat, clipping may be required every eight to 12 weeks. Basic care that is necessary for all dogs is also important, to include trimming his nails as necessary and keeping his ears clean and dry. In addition, you will want to brush his teeth regularly to ensure his overall dental health. The Aussiedoodle is considered to be easy to train; training should start as early as eight weeks of age and should include behavior training to help your dog avoid the development of bad habits. When training, positive reinforcement techniques are recommended. Socialization is also important so that your Aussiedoodle will be comfortable around other people and animals.

The Aussiedoodle is typically intelligent, outgoing, sweet, patient and devoted to their family, making them a great member of a household with children and other pets. While a high energy dog, the Aussiedoodle loves spending time with his family, even if just lounging around the house. As the Australian Shepherd is a herding dog, an Aussiedoodle may follow his instincts and try and herd members of his family, particularly children, which he may try and do by bumping or nipping. You can work on stopping this behavior by responding with a command. Aussiedoodles are typically very smart and very trainable, as both parent breeds are highly intelligent. Even at a very young age, the Aussiedoodle will be ready and able to learn from his training. Most Aussiedoodles love having a job to do and you will want to incorporate this into your daily activity with your pet.
